Avoid the Crowds at Glacier! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Was exhilarating to kayak and then explore the relatively uninhabited island away from the crowds at Glacier. We hiked to the top of an overlook providing a great view of the surrounding island and lake. The guides were super friendly, easy-going and very helpful. We enjoyed every minute and strongly recommend this to visitors to the Flathead Valley."

See Wildlife!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Awesome excursion - We kayaked out onto Flathead Lake over to Wild Horse Island (about an hour). Once there, we headed up the trail and saw big-horned sheep, deer, grouse, and the beautiful wild horses! We ate the lunch … which was delicious at the highest point, so we could get all the views. We would definitely do this tour again."

Highly Recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"See my smiling face? I was so proud of myself and our group for paddling a mile in a kayak from Dayton to Wild Horse Island! (and a mile back!). [Tour Glacier] provided all the equipment, guidance and lunch for our group and kept us safe in quickly changing weather and lake conditions. If you enjoy kayaking and want an adventure- I highly recommend!"

Learn More About Wild Horse Island

Wildlife
Wild Horse Island is a dream destination for wildlife lovers and photographers! Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, mule deer, songbirds, waterfowl, bald eagles, falcons, osprey, coyotes, and the island’s five wild horses. Please enjoy wildlife from a distance.
History
The Kootenai tribe that inhabited the shores of Flathead Lake had a name for this island, "Qwil Qanqami" (Kwiss-con-ka-may) that translated as "big" or "huge Island."  Members of the tribe would swim their horses over to the island for safe keeping and protection of the horses from enemy attack.  Wild Horse Island was established as a state park in 1978.
Size/Location
Spanning 2,160 acres, Wild Horse Island is the largest island in a freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. This pristine, primitive island offers a true escape into Montana’s wild beauty—set at 47.84715° N, 114.23458° W in the heart of Flathead Lake.
Structures
A historic homestead from around 1911 still stands on Wild Horse Island, offering a glimpse into early life on Flathead Lake. The weathered cabin and remnants of farm structures tell the story of the island’s first settlers and their rugged, self-sufficient lifestyle.
Amenities
Wild Horse has a designated trailhead at Skeeko Bay and Eagle Cove. A public restroom is located up the trail from Skeeko Bay. This is the only designated restroom on the island.
Trail System
Wild Horse Island features a network of scenic trails that wind through open meadows, forests, and along stunning lake overlooks. Hikers can spot wildlife like bighorn sheep and wild horses while exploring routes that range from easy walks to moderate climbs
