A Winter Wonderland: Skiing Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, Montana

Check this gem out! Nestled in the rugged peaks of the Montana Rockies lies a hidden spot for winter sports enthusiasts: Whitefish Mountain Resort. With 11 lifts, it’s the place for breathtaking scenery, diverse terrain, and short lift lines. Whitefish Mountain Resort offers a friendly skiing experience for both seasoned shredders and brand new beginners. There really is something for everyone here. Don’t go to Colorado with all it’s people and traffic.

A Paradise for Powderhounds

Whitefish Mountain Resort boasts over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, catering to all skill levels.

Whether you’re carving down groomed trails like Gray Wolf, exploring Mully’s Moguls, or seeking out untouched powder stashes in the backcountry of Hell Roaring Basin, there’s something for everyone here. With an average annual snowfall of over 300 inches, the resort delivers prime conditions for skiing and snowboarding.  I’ve even heard tight lipped teenagers say, “This is awesome!” – A magnum opus for a 16 year old boy.

The winter season typically runs from December to April, with peak conditions usually occurring between January and March. Check the snow report here. After the beginning of April, the resort will close out of sensitivity to bears.  It’s their home, so let’s try to be good to them!

Stunning Scenery at Every Turn

One of the best things about skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort is the scenery that surrounds you at every turn. You are treated to panoramic views of Glacier National Park, the Whitefish Range.  Try the run ‘Inspiration’ on a clear day and get an amazing view of Whitefish Lake.  Whether you’re cruising down the slopes or riding the chairlifts, the beauty of Montana is all around.

Plan Your Parking

Here’s how I like to do it.

1.      Arrive at 8:45 or 9am so you can get a spot in the Pine or Spruce Lot.  They are free and you can ski directly to the chairlifts once you walk to the end of the lot.

2.      Chair 6 and Chair 2 open at 9:00am.  Chair 1 to the Summit opens 9:30am.  So walk to the end of the parking lot and ski down. It takes you directly to Chair 6 lift.

3.      Ride Chair 6 and upon exiting, veer left toward Chair 2.

4.      Avoid Chair 1, Big Mountain Express, and let the line die down. It’s not even open until 9:30 am.

5.      Take one run on Chair 2.  When you arrive at the bottom, now you should get in line for Chair 1 to go up to the Summit.  Hopefully the line is a little shorter.

6.      Enjoy a day skiing the backside of Big Mountain.

7.      When you are ready to return to your car, ski partially down the run at chair 6.  There will be a little turn off to your right that is halfway down.  Take that all the way back to your parking lot!  Works great.

Family-Friendly Fun for All Ages

Whitefish Mountain Resort is not just for hardcore skiers and snowboarders – it’s also a fantastic destination for families looking to enjoy winter activities together. The resort offers a variety of programs and amenities tailored to younger visitors, including ski lessons, childcare services, and supervised activities at the Kids’ Center. With dedicated beginner areas and gentle slopes for learning, parents can rest assured that their little ones will have a safe and enjoyable experience on the mountain.

Après-Ski Delights

After a day of exhilarating skiing, Whitefish Mountain Resort offers a plethora of après-ski activities to help you unwind and relax. Head to one of the resort’s cozy lodges or slope-side bars to enjoy a hot cocoa or a locally brewed beer while swapping stories of your day on the mountain with fellow enthusiasts. For those seeking a more refined experience, Whitefish town itself offers an array of options like: restaurants and shops.

Glacier provided one of the best tours I’ve ever had. They phoned me twice to confirm the reservation and tell me what to expect on the tour. Our guide, Adam, was very knowledgeable, friendly, and flexible. The 5-hr driving tour included many key spots in Glacier National Park plus an excellent lunch. This company made the first visit to Glacier both easy and memorable.

Adam was awesome. Super knowledgeable about the area and park. A very to earth easy to chat with guy. This tour is low key. See some sights. Gain some knowledge. Not even slightly strenuous.

Adam was out tour guide today, and despite the awful rainy weather we dealt with, he made the day a very fun and enjoyable experience. His knowledge of the park, its history and the area overall made things fun and lifted our spirits in spite of the weather. He’s really great at his job and we’d highly recommend using Glacier Tours to get familiarized with the park.

Dan was our tour guide. He had so many interesting facts and stories about what we were seeing. He kept me thoroughly engaged. I am so glad we did this and would recommend. We saw things we never would have known about if we were out on our own. So glad we took the tour with Dan.
